Who is Mrs. Kelly?
A little bit about me:
My name is Marilyn Kelly. I am originally from upstate New York. I always wanted to be a teacher from when I was very young. I orignally went to college in Ohio for Art Education, later moved to Florida and attended the University of South Florida, College of Education where I majored in Social Studies Education and became certified to teach 6-12th grade Social Studies in 2003. I interned at Haile Middle and have been teaching here at Johnson Middle School and I love it!
This is my third year participating in the Manatee County Teaching American History Grant for history teachers. As a participant I've had the opportunity to hear history scholars lecture from across the county. We have also traveled to Philadelphia, Charleston and Washington, D.C. where we meet with scholars and trek to historic sites with them. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn with other teachers and take photographs which is another passion of mine!
One of the five AREAS OF INTERACTION in the IB programme is Community & Service. Projects which relate to this topic is another strong interest of mine. My own personal project is the ongoing clean-up at the neglected Adams-Rogers Cemetery. I also encourage to Trick or Treat for UNICEF each year as one way to enable my students to participate in GLOBAL OUTREACH, another core value of the IB programme.
All of my students are expected to participate in the MANATEE COUNTY HISTORY FAIR, which supports inquiry based learning because each student or group of students do an in-depth research project on an area of history which interests them and then presents thier findings through supporting a thesis statement on a website, project board, performance, written paper or documentary. I am so proud that we had four students at Johnson who were picked to represent the Manatee County History Fair Team at the State Competition in Tallahassee this past spring!
On a personal note, I have two children. I love swimming and going to the beach, doing arts and crafts, as well as watching sporting events and shopping.
